Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Diploma Mill?

A diploma mill (also known as a degree mill) is a company or organization that claims to be a higher education institution but provides illegitimate academic degrees and diplomas for a fee. These degrees may claim to give credit for relevant life experience, but should not be confused with legitimate prior learning assessment programs. They may also claim to evaluate work history or require submission of a thesis or dissertation for evaluation to give an appearance of authenticity. Diploma mills are frequently supported by accreditation mills, set up for the purpose of providing an appearance of authenticity. The term may also be used pejoratively to describe an accredited institution with low academic admission standards and a low job placement rate. An individual may or may not be aware that the degree they have obtained is not wholly legitimate. In either case, legal issues can arise if the qualification is used in résumés.

What are some common Employment Verification questions asked of a previous employer?

During the employment verification process, a series of questions chosen by the prospective employer will be asked of the previous employer be a member of our verifications team. Some common questions include:

  • Was the candidate employed there?
  • What were the dates of employment?
  • What position did the candidate hold?
  • Is the candidate eligible for rehire?
  • What are the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses?
What is included in military records?

Military personnel records are primarily administrative records and can contain information such as:

  • enlistment/appointment
  • duty stations and assignments
  • training, qualifications, performance
  • awards and medals

  • separation/discharge/retirement (including DD Form 214, Report of Separation, or equivalent)
  • and other personnel actions.

How do you check professional references?

Professional references are provided by the candidate, including contact information (phone number and/or email). Our verifications team will make a series of attempts to contact the reference using this contact information in order to ask the professional reference questions provided by the client and record the answers. We have found that contacting the reference via phone is the most reliable way to get the information required.
